How to Change the Shipping Address on a Shopify Order
To change the shipping address on a Shopify order, open the order, click the ⋯ menu in the Customer section, choose Edit shipping address, update the fields and click Save. Shopify recalculates taxes on unfulfilled orders but never reruns shipping rates. If you already bought a label, void it and cancel the fulfillment first; once the carrier has scanned the package, only the carrier can redirect it.
- Staff change a Shopify order's shipping address from the order's Customer section, not from the Edit button, and need the Manage order information, Edit orders or Fulfill and ship orders permission.
- Shopify recalculates taxes for the new destination only on unfulfilled orders and shows the previous tax, new tax and difference; shipping rates are never recalculated.
- Shopify validates order addresses and flags them with a yellow warning or a red error; errors can't be marked as valid and must be fixed before delivery.
- A Shopify Shipping label can be voided only within 30 days, with no tracking events, if it isn't USPS First Class Mail and wasn't added to a USPS manifest in the last 15 minutes.
- Editing the address on an order doesn't change the customer's saved profile address, and editing the profile doesn't change orders already placed.
To change the shipping address on a Shopify order, open the order from Orders, click the ⋯ menu in the Customer section, choose Edit shipping address, update the fields and click Save. Shopify recalculates taxes for the new destination on unfulfilled orders, but it never reruns your shipping rates, and it can't change the billing address at all. The step people miss is the label: if you already bought one, you have to void it and cancel the fulfillment before the address change does anything useful. This guide covers the admin steps, what changes afterward, and the label and fulfillment cases that trip teams up.
Can you change the shipping address on a Shopify order?
Yes, from the order's Customer section, as long as the package hasn't left. The address change is separate from Shopify's order editor: the Edit button handles items, quantities, fees and discounts, while the Customer section handles the shipping address, email and phone. We covered the editor side in how to edit an order in Shopify.
Here is where each kind of address change lives, according to Shopify's help center:
| What you want to change | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping address on the order | Order > Customer section > ⋯ > Edit shipping address | Taxes recalculate on unfulfilled orders |
| Billing address on the order | Nowhere | Not editable after the order is placed |
| Delivery method (shipping, pickup, local delivery) | Nowhere | Can't be switched on an existing order |
| Customer's saved address book | Customers > customer > Manage > Manage addresses | Affects future checkouts, not past orders |
| Address printed on a bought label | Void the label and buy a new one | A label isn't updated by an order edit |
| Address of a package in transit | The carrier | Shopify directs you to the carrier with the package reference |
Staff need one of three permissions to edit the shipping address: Manage order information, Edit orders or Fulfill and ship orders. That's looser than editing line items, which requires Edit orders.
How do you change the shipping address on a Shopify order?
Open the order, use the ⋯ menu in the Customer section, choose Edit shipping address, fix the fields and save. On desktop:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the order.
- In the Customer section, click the ⋯ menu and select Edit shipping address.
- Update the fields. If Shopify can't deliver to the address, a warning or error appears and you need to resolve it before you can continue.
- Review the tax adjustment in the Summary card, then click Save.
In the Shopify app, tap the order, tap the menu icon in the Customer section, tap Edit shipping address, make the change and tap Save or the checkmark.
Shopify checks addresses automatically on new online and API orders, and the result shows up in two places. On the Orders list, an icon next to the order number opens the Edit shipping address dialog. On the order itself, a Review address issues link appears under the shipping address. A yellow icon is a warning, meaning delivery might be delayed or fail; a red icon is an error, meaning the address can't be delivered to. Inside the dialog you can:
- Click Use suggestion to accept Shopify's corrected address. Suggestions only appear when Shopify is confident about the intended address.
- Click Mark as valid to keep what the customer typed. This is only available for warnings, not errors.
- Edit the fields by hand and click Save.
- Click Email customer to ask for confirmation. The subject is prefilled as "Confirm shipping address for order #XXXX."
Full validation support covers the United States, Canada, Australia and a list of mostly European countries including France, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland. Other countries are still checked but get fewer suggestions. You can also filter the Orders list by Address validation (Not validated, Has issues, No issues) to catch problem orders before they reach the packing bench.
What happens to taxes and shipping after you change the address?
Taxes are recalculated for the new destination, shipping isn't, and nothing is charged or refunded until you act. Each outcome needs a different follow-up:
| After the change | What Shopify does | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Tax goes up | Shows previous tax, new tax and the difference | Send an invoice for the difference, or collect it later from the order page |
| Tax goes down | Shows the difference as owed to the customer | Refund the difference after saving |
| New address is in a pricier shipping zone | Nothing; shipping rates aren't recalculated | Open Edit and add a custom shipping fee, then invoice |
| New address is in a cheaper zone | Nothing | Refund part of the shipping fee if you want to |
| Items added after the change | Taxed at the order's current address | No extra step |
Two limits apply. First, taxes recalculate only on unfulfilled orders, so an address change after fulfillment doesn't touch tax. Second, taxes can't be changed on orders Shopify won't let you edit, which the help center lists as imported orders, Shop Pay Installments orders and local delivery orders.
A worked example: a customer in Portland, Oregon pays $80 with no sales tax, then asks you to ship to a friend in Seattle instead. Oregon has no sales tax and Washington does, so after you save the new address the Summary card shows the Washington tax owed. You send an invoice for that amount, or decide to absorb it and leave the balance uncollected. The shipping fee stays whatever it was at checkout.
What if you already bought a shipping label?
Void the label, cancel the fulfillment, edit the address, then buy a new label. The order of those steps matters, because Shopify requires the label to be voided before a fulfillment can be cancelled, and labels are bought from an order's Unfulfilled section.
A Shopify Shipping label can be voided only if all four conditions hold:
- It was bought no more than 30 days ago.
- It has no tracking events, such as a carrier acceptance scan.
- It isn't a USPS First Class Mail label.
- It wasn't added to a USPS shipping manifest within the last 15 minutes.
The full sequence on desktop:
- Open the order. In the Fulfilled section, click the ⋯ menu, then Void label, pick a reason and click Void label and insurance. The label cost comes back as a credit on your Shopify account, not as a cash refund.
- In the same Fulfilled section, click the ⋯ menu, then Cancel fulfillment. The order's fulfillment status goes back to Unfulfilled.
- In the Customer section, choose Edit shipping address, fix it and click Save.
- In the Unfulfilled section, buy a new label.
If you need to do this for many orders, Orders > Shipping labels lets you void up to 250 labels at once.
When the label can't be voided, Shopify's troubleshooting page gives a different path. Duplicate the original order (or create a draft order with the same customer and items), mark the new draft as paid so the customer isn't charged twice, buy the label from the new order, and optionally paste the new tracking number onto the original fulfilled order. Keep two side effects in mind: a duplicated order is a new order with a new number, and because it starts as a draft it gets the date you complete it, not the original purchase date. Our post on Shopify draft order dates explains why that matters for month-end reports.
Here is how the scenarios compare:
| Situation | What works | What doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| No label yet, order unfulfilled | Edit the address and ship | Nothing to undo |
| Label bought, no scans, under 30 days | Void label, cancel fulfillment, edit, rebuy | Editing the address alone; the old label still prints the old address |
| Label is USPS First Class Mail or already manifested | Duplicate the order, buy a new label | Voiding in the admin |
| Carrier has scanned the package | Contact the carrier with the package reference | Anything in the Shopify admin |
| Fulfilled by a fulfillment service | Contact the service to stop it | Cancelling in the admin, which doesn't stop work in progress |
The last row is the quiet failure. Shopify warns that cancelling a fulfillment in the admin doesn't stop a fulfillment service that has already started, and that some fulfillment apps don't pick up order edits at all. If a 3PL pulls orders the moment they're paid, an address you fix ten minutes later may never reach their system. Ask your provider how they sync address changes, and if the answer is "they don't," put the order on hold before you edit it and message the warehouse directly.
Should you edit the order or the customer profile?
Edit the order when the package needs to go somewhere else, and edit the profile when the customer has moved. They're two different records, and changing one doesn't change the other.
Each order carries its own copy of the shipping address, captured at checkout. The customer profile holds an address book that pre-fills future checkouts. To update the profile, go to Customers, click the customer, and in the Customer overview section click Manage > Manage addresses. From there, click Edit next to an address or Set as default to change which one is used first. Shopify's docs don't say that a profile edit flows into orders already placed, so when a customer tells you they "updated their address," check the order itself before you ship.
Two related cases come up in support:
- The customer entered the wrong address and caught it right away. Edit the order. If they also want it saved for next time, update the profile too.
- The customer moved after ordering. Edit the order for this shipment and the profile for future ones. Any orders they place later will use the new default.
If you're fielding these requests by email several times a week, the better fix is to let customers correct the address themselves in the first minutes after checkout. Shopify doesn't offer that natively; our guide on letting customers change their shipping address after checkout covers what's built in and what apps add.
Which orders can't have their address changed?
Any order that has already shipped, plus the cases where Shopify blocks the edit or the edit has no effect. The clear ones from Shopify's documentation:
- Fulfilled orders. The address field may still save, but the package is gone and taxes won't recalculate. Void and cancel first if the label qualifies.
- Orders with a bought label. Editing the order doesn't reprint the label. See the previous section.
- Local delivery and pickup orders. The delivery method can't be switched, so you can't turn a pickup order into a shipped one by adding an address.
- Imported, app-created and Shop Pay Installments orders. Shopify says taxes can't be adjusted on these because the orders can't be edited. The help center doesn't spell out whether the address field itself is locked on every one of them, so test on the specific order rather than assuming. Shopify's label troubleshooting page also notes that editing the address may be blocked on orders placed through Facebook.
- The billing address on any order. Not editable, by staff or by apps. Merchants on the Shopify Community report leaving it as is, adding an internal order note with the corrected details, or refunding and recreating the order when compliance requires an exact match.
For developers, the same change is available through the Admin GraphQL API: the orderUpdate mutation accepts a shippingAddress and requires the write_orders scope. That's the mechanism address-change apps use, and it has the same real-world limit as the admin button. Changing the address in Shopify changes a record, not a package.
How RetroOrder helps
The steps above are staff-only, and most address fixes start with a customer emailing "I typed my street wrong" minutes after paying. RetroOrder Unlimited adds a Change shipping address block to the Thank-you page and the Order status page (the Order status block needs new customer accounts), so the customer corrects the typo before anyone on your team sees the ticket. Only the order's own customer can use it, and the block is hidden once the order is fulfilled, fully or partially, or cancelled, so it can't redirect a package that already has a label. It doesn't touch the billing address or the delivery method.
RetroOrder Unlimited is $9.99/month with a 14-day free trial, and it also includes unlimited order backdating. The free plan covers 10 backdated orders per calendar month but not customer address changes. If your warehouse pulls orders the moment they're paid, pair the block with a short fulfillment hold so the corrected address lands before the pick list does.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change the shipping address on a Shopify order after it's placed?
Yes, as long as the order hasn't shipped. In the Shopify admin, open the order, click the ⋯ menu in the Customer section and choose Edit shipping address. Staff need the Manage order information, Edit orders or Fulfill and ship orders permission. The billing address can't be changed on any order.
Does changing the shipping address change the shipping cost on the order?
No. Shopify doesn't recalculate shipping rates when you edit an address. If the new destination falls in a more expensive zone, open the order editor and add a custom shipping fee, then send the customer an invoice for the difference. Taxes, on the other hand, are recalculated automatically on unfulfilled orders.
Can I change the address after I've bought a shipping label in Shopify?
Only by voiding the label first. A label can be voided within 30 days of purchase if it has no tracking events, isn't USPS First Class Mail and wasn't added to a USPS manifest in the last 15 minutes. Void it from the order's Fulfilled section, cancel the fulfillment, edit the address and buy a new label. If the label can't be voided, duplicate the order and buy a label from the new one.
Does Shopify notify the customer when I change their shipping address?
Shopify's help pages on editing customer details don't describe an automatic email for an address change. If you want written confirmation, the Edit shipping address dialog has an Email customer option that prefills the subject with the order number, which is useful when Shopify has flagged the address with a warning.
If I update the customer's address in their profile, does the order update too?
No. The customer profile holds the saved address book used at future checkouts, while each order carries its own copy of the shipping address. Shopify's docs describe editing them as two separate tasks, so if an order needs a new address, edit it on the order itself. Update the profile too if the customer has moved.
